Getting Closer

Summer Cover-min (1).jpg

Welcome back! Getting Closer is the third song on the record; it marks the beginning of the album’s Summer leg and is rooted in a Spirit of the Bear traDition.

If you’ve been following us for a while now, first of all, you’re amazing and we love you. Second of all, though, you may have noticed that on both of our previous full-length albums, track 3 features lead vocals from our keyboard player Danny Svenson. This album is no different. Danny came to us with an already very fully-formed demo of this song (which you can hear at the bottom of the page), and we spent a ton of time at the Kentucky cabin re-working sections and figuring out how each band member’s parts were going to fit in the song. In the end, we changed the key, added something called the “Vampire Weekend section” (you’ll know when you hear it), and enlisted the production prowess of our AMAZING Nashville-based orchestral synth-pop wizard friend Jesse Gillenwalters (a.k.a. Basic Printer) to add his signature production touch. The final product is a lot different than the original demo; it’s slimmer, more direct, and we’re super proud of it. Lyrically, it talks about growing up, finding love, and faking it until you make it, which is something we’ve all had to do to get by at one point or another. Here’s to Danny and this relatable indie-pop BANGER.

Lyrics

Take another fortune
And break up at the seams
We may have never done this
Our brains drip of defeat
So strange to say
So strange, okay

I only see when I’m asleep
My body’s beat

Take a fall, no pain at all
Broken doors and crystal balls
Additionally, emotion is key
Rearrange everything, Erase and repeat

Broke but never broken
Never chosen
